Dedication
I
dedicate this blog to The Great Barrier Reef and all within it that are dying all because of corporate greed.
Foreword: what is happening to The Great Barrier Reef
Now
that Tony Abbott and the Liberal party is in control, the plan to remove 3
million cubic metres from The Great Barrier Reef to build the largest coal
export terminal has been enforced regardless of its world heritage
classification and UNESCO protection. Not only will this be damaging and
potentially killing the world's most diverse and largest living organism and
ecosystem, but will also lead to more than 100 million tonnes of greenhouse
gases being released into our atmosphere, seriously damaging efforts to tackle
climate change. These changes will be irreversible and will have extreme
consequences on the environment. The Great Barrier Reef is home to over 1,500
species of fish, 134 species of sharks and rays, six of the world’s seven
species of threatened marine turtles, more than 30 species of marine animals
(including the endangered dugong), 411 types of hard coral and one-third of the
world’s soft corals. All of the Great Barrier Reef is in danger due to the
greed of the Australian government all for money. In the past 6 months alone (the first stage
of dredging) there has been a steep increase in deaths of endangered marine
wildlife - 6 dolphins, 10 dugongs and 231 turtles have washed up dead near
Gladstone on the Great Barrier Reef. Fishermen and their families have also
been getting sick and have noticed that many of the fish have washed up with a
strange flesh disease. This is the epitome of corporate greed and monetary gain
at the expense of our planet.
Poem: Glimpse of a polluted future
Glimpse of a Polluted Future
Where are the birds that used to dot the sky?
They're not here anymore, and
I have to wonder why.
Where are the fish that used to swim in this stream?
I can't see them anymore.
What does that mean?
Where are the frogs that used to croak around this lake?
I can't hear them anymore.
There must be some mistake.
I wish there was a clock whose hands I could rewind.
We might have saved these
creatures if we'd just had more time.
Time to make people see how we're damaging our Earth,
Time to realize what it all
was truly worth.
But the animals are disappearing at an alarming rate.
If we don't finally band
together, it may really be too late.

Work reflection
1. This assessment task was to create a protest anthology for
something we are strongly fighting for or against. I think the point of this
assignment was to perhaps teach us students that fighting for what we believe
in is vital, whether it's the norm or not. Along with this, we're being taught
to use evidence to back our argument through poetry, videos, pictures,
interviews, opinions, surveys, petitions etc.
2. My foreword, I believe, is successful as it’s very descriptive of
the issues with plenty of facts that gives the audience freedom to choose
whether they’re for or against the issue. I also think my visual text (which
consists of a few videos) is strong as it shows pictures and film of the
dredging and has people telling their story and their opinion towards the
subject.
3. My poem is not as strong as it could be as I couldn’t find a poem that is specifically about The Great Barrier Reef getting damaged due to Coal Mining. And instead I had to find a poem just on pollution and how it’s ruining the planet. Other than this my responses were quite strong and convincing, I believe.
4. Next time when I am preparing my assessment I’ll decide what format I’ll present my assignment in more carefully, as I chose Blogspot and it’s difficult as I can’t use it on the school server and it was annoying to use.
